Data Engineer

Role Summary

The Data Engineer will form the backbone of all data-related processes at Orion. You have a passion for programming and solving problems with code. A primary component is to prepare data for analytical or operational use. Your strong foundation in data and software engineering, database design, and data analysis will be valuable in helping us meet ever growing demands of big data. It is an expectation that knowledge of best practices is used to identify efficient ways of collecting and storing data, deploying data products, and ensuring that our data is reliable, accessible, and secure.

 

What You Will be Doing

  • Build infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation, and integration of data from different data sources using SQL and cloud-based data programs.
  • Actively contribute to design and governance of our data platform including architecting our data warehouse and development of machine learning.
  • Continued development and design of scripts/queries to retrieve accurate data and provide to our analysts in a meaningful way.
  • Ensure fully automated testing by designing and writing automated unit and integration tests.
  • Responsible for facilitating the team to meet deadlines and deliver working data solutions, including overall end to end accountability for all working solutions.
  • Contributing to development of new data processes and applicable process documentation.
  • Assisting the team with other data tasks as needed.

 

What You Bring to This Role

  • Bachelors’ degree in computer science, computer engineering, or related technical discipline
  • Knowledge of applied mathematics, statistics, or physics
  • Knowledge of database management, algorithms, and data structures
  • 3+ years of experience in data engineering and back-end software engineering with experience writing complex SQL queries to extract and integrate data
  • Excellent working knowledge of relational databases (SQL) and statistical programming languages (Python)
  • Advanced knowledge of SQL databases, data warehousing, data modelling, data tools, data validation and integrity
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people who are both technical, and non-technical alike
  • Experience with AWS and/or Microsoft Azure
  • A passion for improving efficiency and helping others
  • Ability to work with little direction and make the best of situations

 

Assets

  • Experience with Business Intelligence tools
  • Previous work experience as a back-end software engineer
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Outlook etc. or similar products like Google Suite
