Role Summary

We are hiring a hands-on Director of Engineering, Application Development to lead a talented Engineering team in developing and delivering customer facing applications for photographers and creative professionals. As the Director of Engineering, Application Development you will join the Engineering leadership team as a key decision-maker in defining our technical vision, strategy, and objectives as we continue to grow. You will help foster a culture of continuous improvement in delivery process, engineering practices, and innovation, with a focus on being a best-in-class product for over 800,000 Pixieset users worldwide.

As the Director of Engineering, Application Development you will report to the Head of Engineering and lead multiple cross-functional teams consisting of Engineering Managers, Technical Leads, Software Developers, QA Analysts, and Software Engineers in Test. You'll also partner closely with the Director of Product to help define and align on the delivery of the product roadmap, setting the Engineering and Product teams up for success.


Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a high performing team in a rapid development environment to deliver best-in-class web and mobile customer-facing applications
  • Plan and manage multiple parallel projects
  • Direct and oversee application engineering activities in the development, release, and maintenance of web applications
  • Define the technical vision for the delivery of web and mobile applications and set strategy and goals across multiple Engineering teams
  • Engage with cross-functional leaders to identify challenges, understand business and technical requirements, and design data solutions
  • Play a key role in ensuring the ongoing alignment of our technology with the overall business strategy for the company
  • Set and ensure the upholding of high standards in engineering practices, across all domains (quality, reliability, scalability, customer focus, etc.)
  • Be an advocate for the Engineering team, and for our product and customers
  • Conduct regular 1:1s, motivate and retain individuals, coach managers, develop skills of team members, participate in performance reviews, hire and train new talent to continue growing the organization


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field, and/or equivalent work experience
  • 8+ years of experience in application development, building high-volume, highly available, scalable backend services and web applications
  • 5+ years of experience as a people manager with direct reports
  • Experience with Agile methodology; modern DevOps and security best practices
  • Good understanding of cloud-based applications
  • Technically-minded and people-oriented
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proven track record of building and scaling high performing teams, committed to being a role model for peers and direct reports, often leading by example
  • Thrives working in a fast-paced continuous delivery environment, self-motivated, detailed-oriented, and passionate about building world-class software
