Duties and responsibilities


The position will work as part of a cross functional Research and Development team and will be primarily responsible for firmware design, support, and implementation, but may be required to contribute in other areas of product development. 


The Firmware Developer is responsible for:

  • Designing and implementing software of embedded devices and systems from requirements to production and commercial deployment
  • Designing and implementing test frameworks and tools to enable automated testing of firmware-related features, where possible
  • Designing, developing, coding, testing, and debugging system software
  • Working closely with the hardware designer to ensure components and designs can meet the required specifications
  • Reviewing of hardware designs for accuracy
  • Reviewing code and design
  • Analyzing and enhancing efficiency, stability, and scalability of system resources
  • Integrating and validating new product designs
  • Enhancing existing firmware and software to support complex Bluetooth/BLE
  • Designing and developing embedded solutions for ARM Cortex core-based microcontrollers
  • Exploring and creating new developments in sensor fusion technology, specifically in Accelerometers and Gyros and algorithm development
  • Supporting software QA and optimize I/O performance
  • Providing post production support
  • Interfacing with hardware design and development
  • Assess third party and open source software
  • Designing and implementing tools related to testing, quality control and quality assurance, where necessary.
  • Working with the cross functional team to help define overall system architectures.


Additionally, due to the ever-changing and sometimes chaotic environment of an early stage, high-tech company, the Firmware Developer may assume additional responsibilities, as required.

Requirements:

  • B.Sc. in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or equivalent experience
  • P.Eng. preferred, please note for EITs the position will named in accordance with APEGA's naming requirements
  • 5+ years experience with the implementation of algorithms and optimizations for ARM based embedded systems
  • Experience in wearables and/or other consumer devices is a plus
  • Is a self-starter with strong communications skills who can work well independently and in a team environment
  • Brings creative energy to the development and execution of projects
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, technical, and analytical abilities
  • Strong time management and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage own workload whilst multitasking in order to meet deadlines
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively with teams
  • Must thrive in a start-up, fast-paced, ever-changing work environment and be comfortable navigating the “grey”
  • Knowledge of wearable device industries, and related product development lifecycle is a bonus

Schedule: Full-time, 40 hours per week from Monday to Friday. 


Employment Status: Permanent, full-time.
