Ajah is a social enterprise based in Montreal, Canada, that builds online tools and services for the nonprofit sector. Two decades of working with nonprofits on community and public-interest technology have shown us first-hand how much data exists in the nonprofit sector and how much potential exists for social impact to be created through better sharing and use of that data. Our work is focused around applying our unique combination of expertise—in technology, governance, and the nonprofit sector—to solve systemic problems, build long-term solutions, and develop sustainable governance frameworks.


Ajah’s founders have been at the forefront of community technology for the last twenty years. We are internationally recognized leaders in the field of community wireless internet access, and open data for the nonprofit sector. We have been invited to speak and advise on these areas across North America and Europe over the past decade. In 2013, Ajah’s founders created the nonprofit initiative Powered by Data to help the nonprofit sector build open, shared data infrastructure through research, policy, and open government.

About the position

We are looking for a mid-level Product Manager who is excited to take responsibility for the design of several products and associated projects that support our data collaboration work within the social sector. We are building tools to organize, collect and generate knowledge, as well as support the diverse needs and requirements of nonprofit actors seeking to foster collaboration around shared data and support evidence-based decision making. 

Working closely with a small but growing team of software developers and with direction from the COO, you will be responsible for the management of multiple agile software projects. This includes project/sprint planning, scheduling, tracking, communications and internal coordination.

You should have experience managing digital projects, managing a team, working with software developers, and translating product/project strategy into detailed requirements and prototypes as needed. You should be an ambitious, articulate, proactive, and energetic team member.


Your specific areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to:

Product Design and Implementation

  • Develop thoughtfully-constructed product roadmaps and lead conception of new features based on deep understanding of organizational objectives, product vision, and user needs.
  • Set and communicate product strategy to relevant stakeholders and team members, ensuring technical feasibility.
  • Work closely with the leadership and development team to identify opportunities for functionality improvement, validate new features, and analyze feedback. 
  • Manage and prioritize the product backlog based on sound analysis of resource constraints and potential benefits.
  • Analyze and manage risks in order to minimize negative effect on a project
  • Develop and support QA systems to identify issues and ensure user experience meets expectations

Management and Coordination

  • Organize and coordinate internal resources and third parties/vendors for the seamless execution of projects
  • Oversee the timely delivery of all project deliverables and product features, ensuring they remain within scope and within budget
  • Run sprint meetings as needed
  • Allocate resources and ensure their availability
  • Create and maintain detailed project documentation
  • Prepare reports and present them to senior management as needed
  • Help ensure a positive and productive relationship with clients

Must have

  • 2-4 years of experience driving the success of software products
  • Proven ability to understand user needs and synthesize these observations into planning and execution
  • Basic technical knowledge of database management principles and/or hands-on experience in software development
  • Working technical knowledge to communicate effectively with developers, such as familiarity with REST APIs
  • Comfortable liaising with senior level contacts
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills
  • Demonstrable organizational skills 

Nice to have

  • Experience in a startup environment (fast-paced, high growth, high pressure) preferred
  • Additional technical knowledge of familiarity with AWS and data engineering principles.
  • Experience with relevant technical skills outside of software project management (e.g. UX/UI, software development, data analytics, etc.)
  • Experience with neurodiversity or related coaching an asset

This is a full-time contract position with the opportunity to become a full-time, permanent job at the end of the contract
