Quantum Engineer – Materials Development

As a Quantum Engineer – Materials Development at Photonic, you are an integral part of the silicon qubit development team responsible for improving the performance of qubit architectures by reducing the electromagnetic noise in the qubits’ local environment, improving device yields, and exploring new opportunities for device improvements. You will work closely with high-performing teams of product engineers and scientists with expertise spanning device physics to classical computer architecture and compilers. Together, you will develop, prototype, and implement key solutions for our silicon-based quantum computer architecture. You enjoy the thrill of learning new technology and new science, while bringing your significant materials science expertise, open mind, and creativity to tackle key challenges as we build the world’s first truly scalable quantum computing system.


WHAT WE NEED YOU TO DO

  • Develop and execute procedures for measuring optical and spin coherence for qubits in silicon
  • Design, test, and deploy new materials processing techniques to improve qubit yield and performance
  • Work closely with the Photonic nanofabrication team to integrate novel processing techniques into process flows
  • Coordinate a team of scientists and engineers to coherently pursue both long- and short-term performance goals
  • Write patents and peer-reviewed articles reporting advances where applicable
  • Identify and build collaborations with outside organizations (government labs, academic groups, partners)
  • Train, guide, and develop current and new team members


WHAT YOU BRING TO OUR TEAM

  • Masters or PhD in Materials Science, Physics, Applied Physics, or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in the field of quantum computing and/or engineering
  • Experience working at the interface of condensed matter physics and quantum science
  • Familiarity with thin film growth methods, metrology methods for crystal quality, and standard nanofabrication clean room techniques
  • Experience performing optical measurements at cryogenic temperatures
  • An understanding of common noise sources affecting solid state spin-photon interfaces
  • Proficiency in working with Python or other modern programming languages
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to new situations in rapidly changing research environment
  • Demonstrated ability to creatively solve engineering problems
  • Outstanding teamwork skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills

The base annual salary range for this full-time role is between $134,000 to $184,000. This range reflects the minimum and maximum target range for new hire base salary across all Canadian locations. Actual compensation may vary outside of this range and is dependent on various factors including but not limited to a candidate's qualifications including relevant education and training, competencies, experience, geographic location, and business needs. Base pay is only one part of the total compensation package. Full time roles are eligible for equity and benefits. Base pay is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
