The Senior System Engineer (Disaster Recovery) is responsible for the on-going design, development, ongoing update and maintenance of Digital Excellence in Health (DxH) Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery plans to ensure resilience and performance of Ontario Health platforms, systems and its clients’ applications.


Here is what you will be doing:  

  • Execute business continuity planning activities for the design, implementation and maintenance of a multi-year DxH Infrastructure strategy cycle and annual Operating Plan cycle to enable alignment to business priorities, efficiency, cost savings, risk mitigation, resilience, and improved time to market.
  • Maintain and disseminate business continuity and disaster recovery plans, annual DxH BIA/BCP assessments/indicators, and validation and maintenance of DxH Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BC/DR) Plans (e.g., DxH BC/DR Policy, DxH BC/DR Standards, DxH BC/DR Processes) across Public and Private clouds including SaaS solutions.
  • As a subject matter expert, work with Product owners to assess infrastructure services and providers to ensure continuous systems availability and the resilience improvement feedback loop for evolving DxH Strategy and Operating Plans.
  • Provide specifications/evaluation of responses for strategic procurements of Infrastructure/Services.
  • Ensure CMDB and Impact analysis documentation are kept up to date.
  • Leverage automation using various technology scripting tools for configuration and troubleshooting.
  • Contributes expertise, content and analysis for Infrastructure/Services initiatives supported by DxH Strategy and Operating Plan.
  • Work across all DxH departments to create and maintain infrastructure/products’ DR plan Procedures in supporting organization’s Cloud First Vision.
  • Contribute expertise, content and analysis for a multi-year Infrastructure/Service Strategy that supports business directions and for Infrastructure Services’ annual operational planning cycle.
  • Conduct research on changing technology/industry directions and assesses the impact on resilience, strategy and operating plans and makes recommendations for change.
  • Provides leadership, guidance and mentoring to junior staff and new hires.
  • Makes decisions where results have substantial impact across the organization requiring sophisticated solutions and long-term correction. Decisions will impact on DxH resilience and availability of DxH BC/DR Plans and their readiness, including Crisis Management function and major DxH-impacting BC/DR incident response, recovery and resumption of OH digital services. Major impact on currency risk management, including the associated compliance risks, operational risks, financial risks and Cyber security risks and posture.
  • Design, Build, Maintain and Document Technical Solutions and their Roadmaps following industry best practices and the organization’s Cybersecurity policies.


Here is what you will need to be successful: 


Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field.
  • Professional Certifications from ISACA, DRII.
  • Experience with industry Standards and Frameworks related to BC/DR (i.e. ISO 22301, ISO/IEC 27000 Series).
  • 5 – 7 years of experience designing and implementing complex systems.
  • Experience with OH procurement processes (gathering requirements to evaluation of vendors’ response).


Knowledge and Skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of industry trends and directions for:
  • Data Centre and Cloud technologies, including SaaS, co-location, facilities and green operations;
  • Hosting, including compute, storage, network, network security resiliency/recoverability, information assurance (e.g. archiving), security, common services (e.g. DNS), enterprise management, virtualization, cloud; and,
  • Corporate technologies, including Active Directory, desktop/virtual desktop, mobile, social, enterprise mail, information assurance (e.g. archiving), enterprise architecture principles and management.
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of technology planning/service Roadmaps, Strategy and Operating Plan development.
  • Familiarity with Business Continuity tools.
  • Solid understanding of policies, cross organizational roles, risk management, and governance.
  • Strong knowledge of organizational processes and business models.
  • Strong Knowledge of Economics of Computing, including costing and pricing models, assessing efficiencies.
  • Ability to have a holistic approach to enterprise Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery.
  • Ability to make decisions where results have substantial impact across the organization.
  • Strong analytical skills to derive insights from analyzing complex discreet data sets and tacit information.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing, to prepare detailed reports/documentation, and to adjust presentation style to suit various audiences.
  • Well-developed conceptual thinking and systems thinking.
  • Ability to deliver communication of complex technical ideas to the audience.
  • Collaboration skills to approach others across DxH with the intentional collaboration in mind and embodies OH DxH “single Team” culture.
  • Strong facilitation and consensus building skills.
  • Ability to use strong influencing and negotiation skills when providing expertise and recommendations to a varied stakeholder base.
  • Ability to present sophisticated technological details to subject matter experts and/or to speak and articulate challenges at stake to non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to demonstrate a well-developed service-oriented approach and customer centric attitude with internal customers, clients, and partners.
  • Capacity to be aware of, control, and express one’s emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build positive relationships, manage conflict and resolve problems in a constructive and empathetic manner.
  • Ability to perform work autonomously with minimal supervision as well as work within a team.
