Observability Engineer

The opportunity


We need an Observability Engineer to join our team in Toronto to support the migration, availability, security, and releases of multiple global cloud products. You will enable data driven decisions for monitoring; and enable strategic alerting, logging, and dashboarding to reduce the mean time to detect and to recover from downtime. You will quickly come up to speed and jump in to immediately respond to availability alerts and security issues, collaborating across teams to plan for timely updates and releases.


Who you are


You have a DevOps background specializing in Observability (monitoring, logging), incident response and runbook automation. You are passionate about leveraging technology to transform our industry and believe that Observability and automation is the only way forward. You have the ability to talk for hours as to why and how it could mature Cloud Operations and you are excited about the implementation and possibility of tools such as Datadog.

Our new Observability Engineer  will:


  • Maintain. You will focus on ensuring a highly available, secure, and compliant Cloud infrastructure. You will monitor systems, uptime, and alerts, minimising downtime by troubleshooting and ensuring timely resolution of production issues. You will improve alerting in both systems and applications using Cloudwatch, Datadog, PagerDuty, and other such monitoring systems.
  • Be diligent. You will follow SOC Compliant processes to make changes and operate the platform. You will ensure other Operational parts such as backup, disaster recovery, antivirus, IDS, etc. are in place. You will review the Security aspects of the platform weekly and raise any issues to the appropriate people.
  • Research technologies. You will explore and recommend tools to strengthen our infrastructure and increase performance, automation, scalability, and security.
  • Collaborate. You will work with architects and developers for all updates and releases.
  • Automate. You will implement IaaS, PaaS, and serverless services in AWS and follow proper version control practices to implement infrastructure automation using Python, Powershell, Shell Script, Terraform, Cloudformation, or other relevant technologies.  
  • Deploy. You will plan and execute the deployments of software to the infrastructure.


Our new Observability Engineer will have:


  • The education. You have a degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or Math. You have, or you are interested in pursuing your AWS Cloud Practitioner, AWS Solution Architect Associate or similar  certifications.
  • The experience. You have a systems or infrastructure operations background supporting AWS cloud hosted applications. You have hands-on experience:

  • Working with configuration management systems such as Ansible
  • Managing administration and configuration of monitoring tools such as Datadog APM (Application performance monitoring) and EUM (End user monitoring) to generate proactive alerts and help in Outage avoidance 
  • Setting up centralized logging using Cloudwatch, Kinesis and finally to a tool like Splunk, Datadog for implementing SIEM use-cases 
  • Implementing user-journey and synthetic transaction monitoring and alerting
  • Preparing environment dashboards and report environment health and availability metrics
  • Working with Python, PowerShell and integrating with third party APIs
  • Rolling out Incident response and runbook automation
  • The drive. You hold yourself accountable and have a true sense of ownership for the outcome of your work. You genuinely enjoy thinking out loud to create the best solutions to complex, tricky problems, using the latest processes. You can focus on the big picture and the details.
  • The collaborative skills. You approach your work as a team player and you have a proven ability to build, grow, and maintain relationships with internal and external application support and development teams.
